Bounce Into Action

Primary Theme:
Increasing physical activity
About

Bounce into Action provides opportunities for physical activity based around table tennis. The project has identified that there are a lack of opportunities locally for women and girls in particular to engage in casual physical activity.

Table Tennis is an excellent way to engage people who don’t do much physical activity as it’s viewed as an accessible, non-intimidating activity that’s ideal for all ages and abilities. In group sessions it can provide exercise and reduce social isolation.

The people we help:
Adults aged Over 50
women and girls

We set up the project because:
We recognised the benefits of exercise and mental health through table tennis. It is a sport many did in their youth and have not played for years but can easily pick up again. Daniel Amen in Making a Good Brain Great notes that people over 40 who exercise at least 30 minutes per session twice or more a week are 50 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s. Exercise protects brain cells from toxins, including free radicals; it helps repair cellular DNA and reduce the risks of cognitive impairment and dementia as well as preserve mental abilities after age 70. One of the most wonderful aspects of table tennis is the fact that many people over the age of 70 regularly play together at various competitive levels and physical disability is not an obstacle.
