About

PROJECT UPDATE 2012
- The Footprints project has recently delivered two new Core Strength classes, continued with Zumba, Hoola Fit, and Buggyfit classes at various locations and started two new Buggyfit classes.
- Due to increasing numbers participating in Hula Fit activity will be moving to a new venue at West Cheshire College in the new year.
- The Buggyfit classes continue to attract regular attendances and are proving to be very popular indeed!

The first part of this project is to set up and lead three walks in target neighbourhoods (Westminster, Wolverham and Rivacre) and to promote independent walking using route maps in walking diaries which will be available to the public through doctors’ surgeries, pharmacies, and other retail outlets.

The walking diaries will also contribute to awareness-raising of the health benefits of walking and of taking regular exercise. It would also be beneficial to the communities if walk leaders from those areas could be trained to lead walks and become independent walking schemes.

The second part of the project is to promote walking and other types of exercise to children in eight local primary schools with the aim of using the work done in schools to disseminate the message about activity to parents and carers.  It is hoped that the parents can be encouraged to take part in activities which the schools develop.

This project also incorporates the Footprints Mens Health Club being run at the Epic Leisure Centre.

The aim is to take men who are not taking regular exercise and introduce them to a routine in a gym to improve cardio vascular health and strengthening exercises.

The programme is led by a qualified Personal Trainer who will initially conduct a 1-1 session with each client to find out what they want to get out of the fitness sessions and will tailor–make an 8 week programme specifically for them.

Participants will attend 2 weekly gym sessions led by the trainer and will be given the opportunity to attend individually, free of charge, on two further occasions in the week. Their progress will be monitored on a regular basis and feedback given.
At the end of the programme, another full 1-1 session will be given to the clients to assess their achievements and to determine the level of improvement made over the 8 week programme.

As an incentive to carry on the good work, those clients completing the 8-week course will be given a FREE 1 month membership at EPIC.
Footprints would require participants to complete:
• A Registration form
• A Welcome questionnaire
• A Feedback questionnaire at the end of the programme
The main aim of the programme is to monitor and log improvements in fitness and wellbeing levels in the participants.

The people we help:
People of any age

Type of activity:
Mainly walking

Outcomes:
Increased sense of belonging within local community; Improved levels of self-esteem; An increased number of people cycling and walking; An increased number of people using open space for physical activity; An increased number of people being active in their daily lifestyles.
We set up the project because:
The number of people in Ellesmere Port recording “poor health” in the last national census was above the national average. Ellesmere Port is one of the most densely populated areas of Cheshire, and suffers from levels of disadvantage far greater than those experienced in the rest of the borough. Our targeted neighbourhoods suffer from the highest levels of health inequalities in the North West, however these communities are often excluded from support due to the relevant affluence of neighbouring communities in Cheshire.
