About

PROJECT UPDATE 2012
- Partner organisation Healthbox are providing popular falls prevention classes.
- Free membership for a limited period was offered for Epic – Exercise 4 Life Challenge. A total of 19 clients took up the offer. Although not new beneficiaries, they were new to exercise as they had previously embarked on the creative classes – illustrating that the project's approach to introducing people to exercise works!
- The Hollymere Tea/Sequence Dancing has recently been launched and Saturday Art Group participants have been encouraged to join a new art group at Stanlaw Abbey.
- Meanwhile, the Cooking for Men course was well received by those that attended!

This project targets excluded or isolated older people, aiming to increase wellbeing through an arts initiative and allied range of physical activity sessions and themed activity weeks.

To date, we have run seated exercises classes in residential homes and sheltered accommodations, organised singing sessions at WRVS luncheon groups and run a gentle aerobics course. We also run a voucher scheme whereby people in Target wellbeing postcodes can access paying classes for free with £25 worth of activity vouchers.

Future plans include a ladies self defence course, walking groups and yoga classes. Outcomes: Increased sense of belonging within local community; Improved levels of self-esteem; An increased number of people using open space for physical activity; An increased number of people being active in their daily lifestyles.

The people we help:
People over 55 years of age

We set up the project because:
The number of people in Ellesmere Port recording “poor health” in the last national census was above the national average. Ellesmere Port is one of the most densely populated areas of Cheshire, and suffers from levels of disadvantage far greater than those experienced in the rest of the borough. Our targeted neighbourhoods suffer from the highest levels of health inequalities in the North West; however these communities are often excluded from support due to the relevant affluence of neighbouring communities in Cheshire.
Key partners:
Healthy Living Centre, Ellesmere Port community centres, EPIC Leisure Centre, Age Concern Cheshire ‘Get Active’, Community Sports Network
Other Funders:
Social Services, Age Concern
Project / Programme value:
£98,065.00
