About

PROJECT UPDATE 2012
- The Monday Munchies cookery sessions have been well attended.
- The WFA group held a stall at West Cheshire College during an open day in November to inform students of the activities of the group. They were able to distribute a large number of flyers and speak to a large number of students. The group provided two Christmas events aimed at families – providing food tasters, a cooking demonstration, raffle and various games.
- Three volunteers completed a Level 2 Award in Understanding Public Health accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health. Three more volunteers also completed a food hygiene course.
- WFA also offered fruit, vegetable and salad bags and eggs to residents of Ellesmere Port as part of the Christmas event at Westminster Community Centre. This proved extremely successful with 95 bags being ordered for 47 people.

The project gives local people within target schools and children’s centres the opportunity to purchase fresh, affordable fruit and vegetables, helping contribute to 5 A DAY targets. The scheme improves access to higher quality, lower priced fruit and vegetables. This combined with the healthy eating and cookery sessions will help to encourage individuals and families to think about healthy eating as a realistic way forward.

Testimonials: “Since I started the scheme we eat more fruit and veg. My younger son needs a little persuasion and this is helping” Tracey Watson; The Acorns Primary School. “I picked up load of healthy recipes which will hopefully encourage the kids to eat more veg.” Liz Booth; The Acorns Primary School.

The people we help:
Children and parents in target schools and children’s centres

Outcomes:
An improved availability of healthier foods; Improved levels of food preparation and cooking skills; Improved knowledge about healthy eating; Increased sense of belonging within local community.
We set up the project because:
The number of people in Ellesmere Port recording “poor health” in the last national census was above the national average. Ellesmere Port is one of the most densely populated areas of Cheshire, and suffers from levels of disadvantage far greater than those experienced in the rest of the borough. Our targeted neighbourhoods suffer from the highest levels of health inequalities in the North West; however these communities are often excluded from support due to the relevant affluence of neighbouring communities in Cheshire.
Key partners:
Links Healthy Living Centre, Community Food Programme, Specialist Health Promotion Team (Community Care Western Cheshire), local target schools and children’s centres
Other Funders:
Community Care Western Cheshire.
