PROJECT UPDATE 2012
- Despite the damp conditions a number of games and activities were recently held in Whitby Park and across Ellesmere Port. A mix of indoor and outdoor events were arranged using community centre venues.
- Project partners Healthbox continued to run the Bootcamp sessions, but this time on the Stanney Estate, designed to target a particular area where consultations have revealed poor health is partly related to lack of local opportunity to exercise. The very popular Healthbox sessions were designed to demonstrate ways in which people can use their own local environment and green spaces to be more physically active, and that they did not
necessarily need to spend money on gym fees. There are plans to run additional sessions on the Stanney estate in February.
As the final stage of the project approaches a celebratory week of activities is planned for half term in February.

The Community Out and About Officer works with local communities and partner organisations to encourage local people to more fully utilise their local parks and green spaces as a leisure and healthy lifestyles resource.

The programme of activity each year includes cycling, guided walks around the local parks and green spaces, wild flower seed collection and sowing and themed events.

The people we help:
People of any age

Outcomes:
Increased sense of belonging within local community; An increased number of people cycling and walking; An increased number of people using open space for physical activity; An increased number of people being active in their daily lifestyles.
We set up the project because:
The number of people in Ellesmere Port recording “poor health” in the last national census was above the national average. Ellesmere Port is one of the most densely populated areas of Cheshire, and suffers from levels of disadvantage far greater than those experienced in the rest of the borough. Our targeted neighbourhoods suffer from the highest levels of health inequalities in the North West; however these communities are often excluded from support due to the relevant affluence of neighbouring communities in Cheshire.
Key partners:
Age Concern Cheshire, West Cheshire and Chester Council, Cheshire Cycling, Cycling Projects, NHS Western Cheshire, Sure Start, EPN Association of Voluntary & Community Organisations, Volunteer Bureau
Other Funders:
Groundwork, Cheshire West and Chester Council, and Schools
Project / Programme value:
£91,766.00
