Improving mental health
About

PROJECT UPDATE 2012
- Activities continued to focus on providing support and training to move people closer to work. The support model consists of training sessions/workshops held on a monthly basis looking at Life Skills, Goal Setting, Communication, and Well Being. This is followed by key worker 1-1 support focusing on completing application forms and letters, CVs, and interview techniques.
- In the last quarter 33 individuals have received training and/or support.

Employment and learning are key determinants of health. This project uses employability as a mechanism of improving the mental health of unemployed people from the targeted ward of Ellesmere Port. The project will support unemployed people to improve their mental health by enabling them to move closer to employment through provision of work experience. The project recognises that employers’ attitudes towards unemployed individuals are to see them as a risk, and it seeks to challenge that stigma. The project focuses on organisational workforce shortages, creating opportunities for local unemployed people, specifically lone parents and people with disabilities. The project links with other local initiatives – both within this portfolio and mainstream provision – to ensure seamless provision without duplication of activity. “It has given me the incentive to find the right job. I feel more confident and not afraid to speak in a group.” Participant.

The people we help:
People who would like to move towards employment in health and social care

Outcomes:
Improved self-management; Increased sense of job control; Increased sense of belonging within local community; Improved levels of self-esteem
We set up the project because:
The number of people in Ellesmere Port recording “poor health” in the last national census was above the national average. Ellesmere Port is one of the most densely populated areas of Cheshire, and suffers from levels of disadvantage far greater than those experienced in the rest of the borough. Our targeted neighbourhoods suffer from the highest levels of health inequalities in the North West; however these communities are often excluded from support due to the relevant affluence of neighbouring communities in Cheshire.
