About

PROJECT UPDATE JANUARY 2012:
- The seasonal drop in temperature has certainly not led to a drop in activity! Health on Wheels rides continued right up to xmas, with participant numbers increasing and good progress towards achieving a sustainable volunteer run model. There has also been an increase in the number of younger people in care/residential homes attending rides.
- Community rides on Thursday evenings were extended into October despite the failing evening light as people were keen to continue meeting for a shorter ride rather than none at all. Many expressed an interest to continue cycling through the winter months if weekend rides were scheduled.
- Through working with Kirkby Sports College and local SEN schools a weekly Wheels For All session has been running at the College and The Elms School. Up to 50 pupils with a variety of learning, physical & behavioural difficulties attend on a weekly basis – many of which had not previously engaged in any physical activity sessions at all. School staff are to be provided with Wheels For All training so that sessions are sustainable post Pedal Away funding.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Pedal Away promotes cycling to those members of the community that are inactive or those who might be considering a return to cycling. The initiative works with specific targeted groups to help them become more active within their daily routines. It promotes cycling as an accessible and enjoyable form of activity.

Pedal Away provides experienced and trained instructors to assist and support people, helping them to gain confidence in a fun and sociable environment. The following activities will be delivered as part of the Pedal Away Programme:

• Adult beginner cycle classes
• Knowsley Wheels for All – adapted cycles
• Targeted group rides
• Community cycle rides
• Health Rides - exercise referrals for the over 40’s
• Pink Pedals - ladies only cycle activities
• Bike Mechanics
• Volunteer Cycle Leader training

To ensure Pedal Away remains accessible, activities are delivered across the Borough. Cycles and helmets can also be loaned free for the duration of an activity.

We set up the project because:
The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 2007 ranks Knowsley as the 8th most deprived local authority in England with 47 of Knowsley’s 99 Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) are within the 10% most deprived in England. Latest mortality figures (2003-05) from the National Centre for Health Outcomes Development(NCHOD)rank Knowsley 3rd for all causes of mortality,7th for circulatory disease, 4th for cancer and 2nd for lung cancer out of the 354 local authorities in England (1st having the highest mortality levels). The Active People Survey 2006 highlighted that the levels of participation in walking and cycling in Knowsley are significantly lower than those occurring nationally, yet the borough has good quality cycle infrastructure (Trans Pennine Trail) and at least two thirds of the Borough is made up of green spaces/countryside.
