Research volunteers needed! (aged 65 and over)
Theme:
Older people suffer from muscle weakness and get tired quicker. But, it doesn't have to be like that. Scientists at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)are offering, totally free of charge, the opportunity to take part in a research study and receive diet and other information that will help you to improve your muscle and bone health. You can take part in the study on your own or come along with a friend.
In order to limit the weakness and feelings of tiredness in old age MMU are offering older people a protein and nutrient supplement, similar to the ones that a doctor would prescribe to unhealthy people and those that an athlete would take after exercise. They will monitor the improvement to physical capability over several weeks. Measurements will be similar to a "health MOT" for older people, including the measurement for osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) which affects so many of our population without them realising until it's too late. This is all free of charge, and MMU will additionally pay all travelling expenses to those who take part in the study.
Volunteers would need to attend the university study centre on Oxford Road, Manchester, on 5 separate occasions spread out over 26 weeks. Volunteers can come in groups of two or three at a time and MMU staff will make it fun and interesting!
